Cardiac Rehabilitation Program

Cardiac rehab is a comprehensive program of education and exercise to help individuals understand their cardiovascular disease and learn to maintain a heart healthy lifestyle. Northside’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program is designed to assist with improving exercise tolerance and promote the development of healthy behaviors to improve an individual’s overall quality of life.

Cardiac Rehab can help you recover from:

  • Heart Attack
  • Heart Transplant
  • Heart Failure and/or Cardiomyopathy
  • Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery
  • Angioplasty with or without Stent
  • Heart Valve Replacement

Our Multidisciplinary Approach

Northside Hospital’s Cardiac Rehab Program offers aerobic and strength training medically supervised by a team of exercise physiologists, nurses, and medical director. Dietary consultation by a registered dietician is available. Educational classes are provided to help with risk factor modification and wellness. An individualized treatment plan is created for each patient upon initial assessment to the program. Goals and progress are discussed with the patient throughout the program.

PHASE II: Consists of monitoring heart rate, rhythm, and blood pressure before, during and after exercise. Education addresses the anatomy and physiology of the disease process, drug and stress management, and the participants receive nutritional counseling.

PHASE III: Designed to help individuals become more independent, each participant will take on more responsibility for their own exercise program. Blood pressure and heart rate are monitored before, during, and after exercise. Quarterly progress reports are sent to your doctor.

In both Phase II and Phase III, group and individual education classes help patients manage blood pressure, stress, nutrition, weight, cholesterol, quality of life, and diabetes (if applicable). Patients can also be referred for smoking cessation if needed. Our staff will keep the participant’s physician updated on their progress.
