Using multiple imaging modalities such as X-Ray, CT and Ultrasound, interventional radiologists obtain images which are then used to guide interventional instruments through the body to perform minimally invasive procedures. Two common and highly effective procedures performed at Northside Hospital using this technology are Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) and Kyphoplasty. In general, procedures such as these tend to be less costly and less traumatic for the patient because they involve smaller incisions, less pain, and much shorter hospital stays.
Interventional Radiology (IR) is playing an increasingly important role in treating patients with cancer from initial diagnosis of cancer to minimally invasive treatment of malignancy. IR can also be used to assist in the management of the complications of malignancy.
