Bariatric Center

For people who have been obese for years, the decision to undergo weight loss surgery, or bariatric surgery, is life changing.  Weight loss surgery is designed to treat morbid obesity by surgically changing the amount of food a person can consume and needs to feel satisfied.  It is only performed on people who are significantly overweight and for whom diet and exercise have failed, but it is a life-changing decision that has the potential to resolve or improve serious obesity-related medical conditions and enhance quality of life.

Accredited by the American College of Surgeons Bariatric Surgery Center Network, Northside Hospital has been performing weight loss surgery for more than 20 years.  In 2011/12, the hospital was once again named #1 in Bariatric Surgery by Atlanta consumers in the National Research Corporation’s annual Healthcare Market Guide.

When it comes to choosing where to have your surgery, there is a lot to consider.  Choosing to have your surgery at a Northside gives you access to a comprehensive array of weight loss services including state-of-the-art surgery – in Atlanta, Cherokee and Forsyth.  Northside was the first in Georgia to perform single-incision weight loss surgery, resulting in fewer scars for the patient.  More recently, the hospital performed its first robotic gastric bypass.  A dedicated nursing unit offers specially trained nurses for caring for weight loss surgery patients.  Pre-surgery informational seminars and aftercare support groups also are available.

An interdisciplinary team of weight loss experts including board-certified surgeons, nurses, dietitians and other health care professionals work to provide the best possible and highly personalized care for all patients.  Bariatric program specialists guide each patient through the process from their one-on-one pre-op teaching in pre-testing through the operation and recovery.
