ScreenAtlanta Mobile Mammography
Hereditary Cancer Program
Breast Care Fund
There is no guaranteed prevention against breast cancer but regular screenings are pivotal to early detection, when the disease is most treatable.
Northside Hospital diagnoses more cases of breast cancer than any other community hospital in the Southeast. We provide comprehensive imaging services at convenient locations across Georgia, as well as through our ScreenAtlanta Mobile Mammography van. Same-day diagnostic mammography and a full range of diagnostic services are offered. Our mission is to give every woman the support she needs during this time of uncertainty.
Mammography is the gold standard for breast imaging – it is the only test that has been proven to significantly reduce the rate of death from breast cancer. As the regional leader in the fight against breast cancer, Northside stands by the American Cancer Society and its recommendation that all women receive annual mammograms beginning at age 40 unless otherwise recommended by your doctor.
Digital mammography allows radiologists to magnify breast images and adjust brightness and contrast to distinguish normal tissue from abnormal tissue. Additionally, Computer-Assisted Detection (CAD) gives radiologists a “second set of eyes” by flagging areas of potential concern.
Northside was the first hospital in Atlanta to offer digital breast tomosynthesis, also known as 3-D mammography. This technology is available at our Breast Care Centers in Alpharetta, Atlanta and Cumming.
Northside makes scheduling a mammogram easy with multiple locations and evening and weekend hours. To schedule a screening, call (404) 851-6577.
Our specialists are fully trained in diagnostic mammography and other diagnostic services, including:
A specially equipped van, made possible through a generous grant from the Northside Hospital-Atlanta Auxiliary, offers mammogram screening at various locations throughout the community. ScreenAtlanta is ACR/FDA/MQSA certified and mammograms provided on the mobile unit are of the same high quality as those provided at our outpatient imaging locations. Each mammogram is performed by a Northside Hospital Registered Radiologic Technologist (RRT), with advanced training and certification in mammography, and is interpreted by a board-certified radiologist, who has received advanced training in breast imaging. To schedule an appointment, call (770) 667-4400.
Northside receives patient referrals from across Georgia for breast MRI services. An MRI is an important tool for doctors to further evaluate a tumor. Research remains ongoing in determining the role of MRI in breast cancer screening; currently it is recommended only in high-risk patients.
Our Hereditary Cancer Program is dedicated to helping you assess, understand and reduce the risk of developing certain types of genetically influenced cancer such as breast cancer. Individuals with a strong family of cancer, which may include earlier than average ages of cancer diagnosis, multiple family members with the same type of cancer, or cancers associated with the same genetic cause (like breast and ovarian), may benefit from a genetics evaluation.
Some patients may be referred for a genetics evaluation after receiving a diagnosis of breast cancer. The Hereditary Cancer Program can help newly diagnosed patients understand the role that genetics might play in their treatment decisions.
If patients can’t afford a mammogram, Northside is here to help. Through generous grants from community partners such as the Northside Hospital Foundation, Susan G. Komen Greater Atlanta, Atlanta 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer, Georgia CORE and the Georgia State Office of Rural Health, Northside is able to provide financial support for mammograms and breast diagnostic services for qualified applicants. Please call (770) 667-4400 or download our flyer for more information.
If you are interested in having ScreenAtlanta come to your location, or you would like copies of our calendar for your employees, please call (770) 667-4400.
Hadassah/“Check It Out”, a partnership with the Greater Atlanta Hadassah, educates young women about breast cancer, including early detection and Breast Self Exams (BSE). Free health screening events are available to corporate and community clients to identify early risk factors and provide breast health education.
