After being nominated by her peers at Northside Hospital, Cynthia Newell won the March of Dimes Nurse of the Year award for surgical services on Nov. 19.
“I never expected to win,” Cynthia said. “It’s just doing the work I do, and being recognized for that was both a great experience and very humbling.”
Growing up, Cynthia remembers taking care of her mother, who was frequently ill.
Being in and out of the hospital. She saw how nurses cared for her mother. It inspired Cynthia to pursue a career in health care.
“My desire to work in surgical services came about while in nursing school,” she said. “During my senior practicum, I chose to observe the operating room. I was allowed to watch a coronary artery bypass procedure and fell in love with the operating room.”
Since then, her career has centered around surgical services, including roles in direct patient care, specialty surgical teams, education and leadership.
She joined Northside Hospital in November 2012 and now serves as clinical education program coordinator for the Surgical Services Quality and Education department.
