BMT Facilities

The NSH-BMT's Program offers state-of-the-art facilities for BMT and Leukemia care. Below are descriptions of facilities the Program uses.

The BMT/Leukemia Inpatient Unit

Northside recently opened the first phase of its brand new, state-of-the-art Bone Marrow Transplant Unit on 4-North.

Features of the new BMT unit include:

  • Closed and isolated facility for exclusive use by BMT and acute leukemia patients
  • All private rooms with computerized electronic medical record documentation availability in each room

State-of-the-art infection prevention including:

  • HEPA filtered facility
  • Eight negative pressure rooms with ante-rooms to preventncross-contamination from patients with existing infections
  • Seamless surfaces through out unit to eliminate colonization of infectious organisms
  • Dedicated exercise room for patients and caregivers with bathroom andshower
  • Specialized BMT pharmacy with the capacity to mix chemotherapy/immunotherapy agents
  • Pharmacy utilizes a computerized medication administration record(MAR)to decrease/eliminate medication errors
  • Dedicated Family Room with computer access, Internet and medical-related literature

Outpatient Clinic Facility

Unique features of the BMT Leukemia Treatment Center:

  • 15,000 square foot outpatient BMT/leukemia treatment
  • Open 7 days a week and holidays
  • Only facility in Georgia that provides HEPA-air filtration to all patient care areas to reduce transmission of airborne infections
  • 10 isolation rooms
  • Comfortable patient lounge chairs and hospital beds for prolonged care
  • Private examination and procedure rooms
  • Family waiting area
  • State-of-the-art chemotherapy pharmacy 

On-site Services:

  • Outpatient administration of high dose chemotherapy
  • Administration of immunosuppressive and antibiotic/antifungal drug administration
  • Blood product administration
  • Peripheral stem cell collection
  • Bone marrow biopsy, pulmonary function testing and EKG
  • On-site aphereis, therapeutic and peripheral blood stem cell collection facility- please refer to Atlanta Blood Services.
  • Photophereis to treat Graft vs. Host Disease 
  • On-site laboratory services 

NSH Hematopoietic Stem Cell Processing Laboratory

A new 4,736 square foot Hematopoietic Stem Cell Processing Laboratory opened in 2010.

  • State-of-the-art facility
  • HEPA filtered facility
  • Four processing bays
  • On-site microbulk liquid nitrogen supply tanks
  • Environmental monitoring system throughout facility
  • Performs autologous, alloegeneic, cord blood and matched unrelated donor processing of cellular therapy products and performs collection of bone marrow
  • Designated NMDP and Gift of Life Registry Bone Marrow Collection Facility
  • Performs adoptive immunotherapy procedures
  • Licensed by the state of Georgia, registered with the FDA and accredited by AABB and FACT
  • Highly Specialized and Trained Staff
  • Supervisor with over 25 years of experience in processing cellular therapy products
  • Quality Assurance and Standards Coordinator with over 15 years experience in processing cellular therapy products
  • Maintains HSC Laboratory in a continued state of compliance and readines with regulatory and accrediting agency standards
  • Serves on the AABB's Cell Therapy Standards Committee
  • Chair of the AABB Cell Therapy Uniform Donor History Questionnaire Task Force
  • AABB Inspector for Cellular Therapy Programs
  • Three additoinal Medical Technologists with more than 50 years of combined experience in hemtopoietic stem cell processing
