Stenosis

Stenosis is the narrowing of the spinal canal, usually due to enlargement of the joints and degeneration of the discs. The narrowing can result in compression of the spinal cord or the spinal nerve roots. With spinal cord compression, there may be symptoms of painless weakness of the arms or legs, numbness and/or bowel and bladder dysfunction.

The spinal nerves may also be affected, causing pain, numbness, tingling and weakness of an extremity. People with lumbar stenosis often experience improvement in their symptoms with bending forward or leaning on a shopping cart when walking.

Treatment for Spinal Canal Stenosis

  • Physical therapy
  • Injectable or oral steroids
  • Surgery that may include decompression or minimally invasive “wedging” of the spine to decrease pressure on the nerves
