General Surgery

Northside Hospital general surgery experts lead the field by performing gallbladder removal, hernia repair, gastrointestinal surgery and breast surgery by traditional and state-of-the art laparoscopic techniques.

Northside Hospital has been nationally recognized as a pioneer in laparoscopic surgery due to our innovative technology and surgical expertise.  The progression to robotic laparoscopic procedures in recent years has been a natural advancement of this minimally invasive technique.

Gallbladder removal (cholecystectomy) for gallstones or severe gallbladder disease – Northside recently performed Georgia’s first-ever Single-Site™ surgery, a cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal), using the da Vinci® Surgical System.  The procedure reduces the appearance of scarring for patients.

Colon and Rectum removal (colectomy) for colon cancer, colitis or intestinal obstruction – This procedure is available via traditional laparoscopy and single-incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) at Northside Hospital.

NOTES - Natural Orifice Translumenal Endoscopic Surgery

Surgeons continue to explore ways to make procedures as non-invasive as possible. Natural Orifice Translumenal Endoscopic Surgery (or NOTES) uses the body’s natural openings to introduce surgical scopes and instruments, seeking to avoid exterior incisions. Instead, internal incisions – in the throat or pelvic floor, for example, allow access to the abdominal or pelvic cavity.

  • TORS (Transoral Surgery) for conditions of the head and neck – Northside was the first in Atlanta to perform robotic TORS for ENT surgery.
  • TIF (Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication) for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, or GERD
  • TAMIS (Transanal Minimally Invasive Surgery) for rectal disease

Eye Surgery

For patients suffering from cataracts and other eye disease such as glaucoma, surgery has undergone tremendous technological advances in recent years. Cataract correction surgery and new lens technology help patients to see more clearly. For patients with glaucoma, Northside was the first in Georgia to perform a trabeculotomy, performed with the Trabectome, which restores the eye’s natural plumbing system, helps it to function better and prevent further damage to the eye.

Robotic Surgery

General surgery is a relatively new specialty area with indications for robotics in procedures involving the gastrointestinal tract such as esophagus, gallbladder and other general surgery procedures. Most recently, the technology has been used in performing weight loss surgery, as well as in combination with Single-Site™ (single incision) technology.
