Gynecologic Oncology Surgery

As the leader in the southeast in gynecologic cancer care, Northside's Cancer Institute continues to diagnose and treat more cases of gynecologic (GYN) cancer than any other program in Georgia.  For the majority of cancer patients, surgery is an integral component to their treatment plan.  Patients at Northside Hospital can rest assured that they are receiving high-quality surgical services from some of health care’s most experienced surgeons.  In fact, Northside leads the way in groundbreaking procedures for better outcomes and less invasive treatments of gynecologic cancers. Four dedicated, women-only surgery suites – dedicated for breast and gynecologic surgery – feature the most advanced technology, facilities and staff. Our dedicated inpatient cancer unit is designed specifically for women diagnosed with gynecologic cancer.  Nurses and staff are specially trained in gynecologic cancer, chemotherapy and symptom management to provide resources, care and overall support. Multiple minimally invasive laparoscopic and traditional surgical procedures are available to treat a wide array of GYN conditions.

Hysterectomy

More than 25 percent of American women will eventually have a hysterectomy, making it the second most common surgery after cesarean section.  Hysterectomy can cure a variety of problems to which the uterus is prone.  Most often it’s recommended for serious cases of fibroids, benign tumors that grow in the wall of the uterus.  It also is used to cure severe cases of endometriosis, heavy non-menstrual bleeding, uterine or cervical cancer, and severe prolapse. In addition to traditional laparoscopic hysterectomy, surgeons at Northside also perform hysterectomy robotically and via single-incision. Northside was the first hospital in Georgia to perform a radical hysterectomy using robotic technology.

Robotic Surgery

Northside ranks in the top 5 percent of all robotic GYN programs in the nation.  By using robotic technology, Northside surgeons are allowed a greater range of motion than humanly possible and the ability to perform more precise, less invasive procedures.  As a result, our patients experience reduced post-operative pain and shorter recovery times.

HIPEC

Northside is the only hospital in Atlanta offering Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemoperfusion, or HIPEC, to treat ovarian cancer. Performed during surgery, HIPEC delivers heated chemotherapy into the abdominal cavity, which allows a much higher dose of chemo to permeate the diseased tissue than could be accomplished conventionally. Physicians at Northside have been performing HIPEC since 2008 and have performed more HIPEC procedures for ovarian cancer than any other hospital in the United States. In 2011, Northside combined HIPEC the da Vinci® robotic surgical system, performing the first-ever reported robotic HIPEC case for ovarian cancer.
