Understanding that recovery is an ongoing process, we at The Peer Project encourage positive interaction as means for growth. We also understand that the Project offers a time and a place for healing. And so we share our experiences with the hope that they will contribute to the process of recovery. The greatest healing occurs when we share our stories.
Our mission is to provide peer-to-peer support. We do that by providing a place for support groups to meet and connecting people with community resources.
We also educate. In both structured and unstructured forums, we provide learning opportunities which take into account the unique challenges faced by those who living with a mental illness. In addition, we employ those who participate in our Program. For every applicable position we need to fill, we actively work to hire competent, stable and professional consumers to provide support and empowerment services.
We are unique. The services we offer to mental health consumers cannot be obtained elsewhere. We are barrier free. Because we have eliminated prevocational activities and unnecessary barriers to employment, our participants are able to work at their own pace, with support from Peer Advocates.
Basic Computing Classes
Based on the Microsoft Office Suite, this program is taught in a classroom setting. The classroom, which is networked and Internet-capable, can accommodate up to six students. To facilitate learning, instructors use textbooks, as well as current software and technology. LCD projection enables the instructor to demonstrate all desktop functions, which creates a low-stress learning environment. Classes can be repeated as needed.
GED & other Tutorial Services
Facilitated by qualified members of The Peer Project. Participants who have perseverance and a desire to achieve are assisted in mastering their GED requirements, via face-to-face assistance. Volunteers provide tutorial resume assistance so that members can create professional and unique resumes that match their employment goals. Volunteers not only empower the participants, but also increase their own abilities to assist and contribute to peers in need. Contact a staff member to learn more about volunteering opportunities.
Assistance and reinforcement will be provided to members of the program as long as needed. At the same time, the program values the inherent capacity of clients to grow. Hope is an essential ingredient in the rehabilitation process, and given the resources and opportunities, any client has the potential for improvement. Support is provided by participants who have become staff members and who offer the unique understanding and insight gained from accepting and managing their own mental illnesses.
A group discussion that talks about preparing for jobs, resume expectations, transferable job skills. The groups conduct mock interviews to practice interview skills. Group members complete department of labor forms, applications, personal data forms to prepare for possible job related forms. During the groups, members practice phone communication skills that may be useful for interviewing and speaking to potential employers.
With regard to the first class description on Basic computing, the facility does not have internet access on member computers or a LCD projection system.
A group discussion that focuses on client experiences, recovery and skills learned to manage mental health symptoms. The members also focus on their communication styles. Role play is done on active listening when engaged in conversations and interactions with others. Staff assists the client with reinforcement of manners and hygiene.
Financial 101: (Budgeting)
A group discussion that reviews the basics of personal finance including budgeting money on a fixed income and ways to monitor variable expenses. Members create and review a monthly budget plan of their personal expenses. A review is also done on ways that each member can reduce expenses on meals, entertainment, and other leisure activities.
A group discussion that focuses on a healthy lifestyle including healthy eating, exercise, ways to reduce stress. Members share experiences on the way coping techniques are used to alleviate symptoms.
The group focuses on creating a basic resume and learning to incorporate skills from past work related experiences. The group also focuses on writing cover letters and post-interview thank you letters. The members are also taught how to format letters properly using MS software.
