This week, we're shining our Employee Spotlight on Belinda Fleming, one of our GI Technicians, to learn more about her career change from the board room to the operating room.
Belinda started her career in corporate America, which she says was extremely demanding and involved an intense travel schedule. With young children at home, she needed a career change so she could be closer to them during the day.
In 2000, Belinda’s father became ill and she felt helpless. Without a healthcare background, she had no way to help. She soon decided that she needed to enter the profession so she could care for her loved ones.
As a nurse, Belinda says she loves making a difference in people’s lives. “The procedures that we perform are literally lifesaving. When a patient comes in for a screening and we find polyps and remove them, or the patient is suffering from Chron’s Disease and is finally treated … it’s a great feeling,” says Belinda.
In 2009, Belinda’s mother was diagnosed with colon cancer. Although she was scared, Belinda knew exactly what her mother needed and what questions to ask her physicians. Those years of medical training came to the rescue, and gave her a sense of peace through the ordeal.
