Director of Surgical Services and March of Dimes Surgical Services Nurse of the Year, Vicki Barnett, will never forget the nurse who bent the rules to let a very young Vicki visit her mom after undergoing days of surgery. Nurse Barnett was able to return the favor many years later to a young girl whose father was terminally ill.
"When I was a young girl, a nurse friend of our family helped me find comfort by bending a rule about children under 12 being restricted from visiting patients. My mother had a serious emergency surgery and although she was recovering, I was unable to see her. Our nurse friend found me alone, crying quietly in the hospital lobby while I waited for the rest of my family. She offered to take me to see my mother. I will never forget the relief and peace I felt after her kindness.
Today, these rules are no longer in existence. We have evolved into a healthcare environment that recognizes the impact of illness on the patients and their families. We now understand the profound influence of meeting the patient’s holistic needs which create a successful outcome for everyone."
Northside appreciates all that you do, Vicki!
