Debbie Claborn has been a registered nurse at Northside for 35 years—her entire nursing career! Debbie went into nursing at the encouragement of her late father, who believed her personality would lend itself well to a career in nursing. And he was right!
Debbie received her Nurse’s Certification in the specialty of continence and works in our Urodiagnostic Center, where she treats patients experiencing all different types of voiding dysfunctions.
“The specialty of continence is so rewarding. It is not a life threatening situation for our patients, but it truly affects their lifestyles. Our patients are so embarrassed about their situation. We give them comfort and ease and a better quality of life.”One of her most rewarding experiences was over a decade ago, when she treated a young man with a spinal cord injury from a motorcycle accident. The patient came in for a diagnostic test feeling embarrassed and frustrated. After evaluating his treatment options, Debbie and the team taught him how to straight cath himself. This form of treatment changed the young man’s life; he is now a sales representative for a catheter company, and comes by the department frequently to inspire current patients.
