If you have arthritis, exercise is probably the last thing on your to-do list. But physical activity can actually help improve flexibility and decrease pain, and walking is one of the best exercises around—not to mention it’s free. Don’t let these barriers get in the way of your next walk.
Barrier: Joint pain
Strategy: Take a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug or use a hot pack prewalk to soothe your achy spots.
Barrier: Bad weather
Strategy: Mix things up by taking your walk inside, such as at a mall or an indoor track.
Barrier: Lack of time
Strategy: Break up a 30-minute stroll into three 10-minute increments.
