Cardiac Imaging

Cardiac Imaging, also known as heart imaging, is a sub-specialty of radiology which focuses on understanding how the heart is functioning. At Northside, radiologists and technologists use advanced imaging technology including a dual source Cardiac CT (64-slice) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to create detailed pictures, so they can effectively study the complex inner workings of the heart to diagnose and treat patients with a wide variety of cardiac conditions.

Cardiac MRI (CMR) is an advanced imaging tool that uses powerful magnets and radio frequency waves to provide comprehensive anatomic and functional information for a variety of cardiac conditions. MRI does not use ionizing radiation (X-Rays) or iodinated contrast agents, is non-invasive and the image quality is excellent. Northside offers a complete set of outpatient and inpatient cardiac MRI protocols utilizing both narrow and wide bore scanners which can accommodate patients of all sizes as well as those who may be claustrophobic.  Some potential indications for cardiac imaging would include congenital heart disease, a detailed assessment of cardiac function, valvular heart disease, ischemic heart disease, cardiomyopathy, pericarditis, myocarditis, cardiac scarring and stress perfusion imaging.

Cardiac CT (CCT) is a fast and accurate noninvasive examination of the heart that evaluates the coronary arteries for plaque and blockages.  Our dual source Cardiac CT is twice as fast as other 64-slice cardiac CT scanners and provides extraordinary anatomical details of the heart and coronary arteries. This study involves an intravenous contrast injection and some ionizing radiation.  Radiation doses for CCT can vary between institutions.  At Northside Hospital, our advanced CT scanner and attentive staff closely regulate radiation dose to make sure that you receive only the amount absolutely necessary for the study
