You've just been diagnosed with a condition requiring surgery. Until very recently your options included traditional surgery with a large open incision or laparoscopy, which uses small incisions but is typically limited to very simple procedures. Robotic surgery is the next generation of minimally invasive laproscopic surgeries. Through the use of the robot-assisted surgery, surgeons are now able to offer a minimally invasive option for complex surgical procedures.
For most patients, robotic surgery offers numerous benefits over open surgery, including:
- Significantly less pain
- Less blood loss
- Fewer complications
- Less scarring
- A shorter hospital stay
Northside leads the way in Robotic Surgery
Northside Hospital continues to lead the way in robotic surgery, performing more robotic procedures than any other hospital in the Southeast. Only a handful of hospitals in the country have performed this minimally invasive technique.
In traditional laparoscopic and robotic surgery, surgeons make several small incisions for the instruments and camera needed to perform the procedure. However, in Single-Site™ (single-incision) surgery, surgeons use a single 2-to-2.5 centimeter incision, often at the bellybutton, to reduce the appearance of scarring. Performing single-incision surgery via robotic-assisted technology allows surgeons to provide patients with procedures equivalent to traditional single incision. The placement of all the instruments through a single incision at the bellybutton still affords the surgeon the advantage of 3D high-definition visualization of the surgical site, and the precision and versatility afforded by robotic instrumentation with minimal pain, a shorter hospital stay and fast recovery for the patient.
As a leader in providing state-of-the-art surgical services, Northside Hospital performs more robotic surgeries than any other hospital in Atlanta and Georgia. Many of the surgeons on staff at Northside are nationally and internationally recognized for their expertise in minimally invasive techniques and were pioneers in laparoscopic technique that lead the way to robotically assisted laparoscopic surgery. Combined with the skill and experience of the operating room nurses and surgical technologists, this level of expertise is critical in the success of utilizing this new technology.
The robotic surgical team at Northside Hospital has worked together for years, which brings a superior level of teamwork and skill to our program.
Northside Hospital performs the most robotic procedures in all of Georgia.
As a pioneer in minimally invasive laparascopic surgery Northside has hosted:
the state’s first Single-Site™ (single incision) cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal)
the first successful delivery of healthy twins following a myomectomy in the United States
the state's first robotic-assisted bladder removal and the first robotic-assisted pyeloplasty (kidney reconstruction) and radical hysteretomy.
