Northside recognized robotic technology as having great potential for additional minimally invasive procedures in a growing range of specialties - having also hosted the first successful delivery of healthy twins following a myomectomy (tumor removal) in the United States, as well as Georgia's first robotic-assisted bladder removal and first robotic pyeloplasty (kidney reconstruction).
New advances in surgical technology allow Northside to stay at the forefront of the medical field. Northside Hospital is the first hospital in Georgia - one of just five hospitals in the world - to acquire the newest addition to the da Vinci robotic surgery product line - the da Vinci ® Si™ Surgical System. The new system is designed to provide additional clinical benefits to patients and operational efficiencies within the operating room (OR) however, it's not just the state-of-the-art technology that leads to better outcomes, but the surgeon and the surgical team's experience that is important. Northside Hospital is home to many of the country's finest surgeons available in health care today. Many of the surgeons on staff at Northside are pioneers in laparoscopic surgery and are nationally and internationally recognized for their expertise in minimally invasive techniques, like robotic surgery. Combined with the skill and experience of the operating room nurses and surgical technologists, this level of expertise is critical in the success of utilizing new technology. The robotic surgical team at Northside Hospital has worked together for years, which brings a superior level of teamwork and skill to our program.
Used for urologic, gynecologic, thoracic and other laparoscopic procedures, robotic surgery allows surgeons to manipulate robotic arms, which mimic the surgeon's motion, to perform procedures with greater dexterity than humanly possible. This minimally invasive technique involves making just a few small incisions for instruments and a small camera, which allow the surgeon to view a full-color, magnified, 3-D image of the surgical site.
The superior motion of the robotic arms and the ability to view the surgical area through high-definition magnification enhances the surgeon's skills and provides patients with a number of benefits including:
You've just been diagnosed with a condition requiring surgery. Until very recently your options included traditional surgery with a large open incision or laparoscopy, which uses small incisions but is typically limited to very simple procedures. Robotic surgery is the next generation of minimally invasive laproscopic surgeries. Through the use of the robot-assisted surgery, surgeons are now able to offer a minimally invasive option for complex surgical procedures.
Imagine major surgery performed through the smallest of incisions. Imagine having the benefits of a definitive treatment but with the potential for significantly less pain, a shorter hospital stay, faster return to normal daily activities - as well as the potential for better clinical outcomes.
With the da Vinci ® Robotic Surgical System, surgeons and hospitals are re-writing accepted standards for surgical care. Robot-assisted surgery is changing the experience of surgery… for the surgeon… for the hospital… and most importantly… for the patient.
It is important to know that surgery with da Vinci ® does not place a robot at the controls; your surgeon is controlling every aspect of the surgery. Learn more about the minimally invasive surgical applications that are today enabled by da Vinci ® in urology, gynecology, cardiothoracic and general surgery.
Overcomes the limitations of both traditional open surgery and conventional minimally invasive surgery.
For most patients, robotic surgery can offer numerous potential benefits over open surgery.

As a leader in providing state-of-the-art surgical services, Northside Hospital performs more robotic surgeries than any other hospital in Atlanta and Georgia. Many of the surgeons on staff at Northside are nationally and internationally recognized for their expertise in minimally invasive techniques and were pioneers in laparoscopic technique that lead the way to robotically assisted laparoscopic surgery. Combined with the skill and experience of the operating room nurses and surgical technologists, this level of expertise is critical in the success of utilizing this new technology.
