Northside Hospital-Atlanta, Northside Hospital-Cherokee and Northside Hospital-Forsyth each have achieved the American Heart Association’s (AHA) Mission: Lifeline® Receiving Center Quality Achievement Award, recognizing Northside’s commitment and success in implementing exceptional standards of care for heart attack patients.
“Northside Hospital is committed to improving the standards of care and patient outcomes of our heart attack patients,” said Liz Sobczyk, director of cardiovascular services, Northside Hospital. “We are pleased that our efforts are being recognized, and I am very proud of our team.”
Each year in the United States, nearly 300,000 people have a STEMI, or ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction, the most severe form of heart attack. A STEMI occurs when a blood clot completely blocks an artery to the heart. To prevent death, it’s critical to immediately restore blood flow, either by non-surgical PCI (percutaneous coronary intervention), coronary bypass surgery or clot-busting medication.
The AHA’s Mission: Lifeline program helps hospitals and emergency medical services develop systems of care that follow proven clinical treatment guidelines, which ensure STEMI patients get the right care they need, as quickly as possible. For patients, this means that they can expect care that’s prompt and consistent, with the latest scientific guidelines from AHA.
As a “STEMI-Receiving Hospital,” each of the Northside hospitals also has the expertise, equipment, facilities and other resources to perform PCI, within the STEMI system of care. One of the strongest comprehensive cardiology programs in the Southeast, Northside Hospital offers a wide range of diagnostic, treatment and support services – encompassing the entire continuum of care for the heart patient.
A team of board-certified cardiologists, cardiac-trained nurses and technologists at Northside has the highest level of expertise in diagnosing and treating disorders like coronary artery blockages, congenital heart defects and heart failure. In addition to Mission: Lifeline, each of the three Northside hospitals is fully accredited as a Chest Pain Center from the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care. Northside Hospital-Atlanta and Northside Hospital-Forsyth also are designated UnitedHealth Premium® specialty centers, in recognition of quality care in cardiac services.
