The Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons has granted its Outstanding Achievement Award to the Northside Hospital Cancer Institute, as a result of surveys performed during 2013. Northside is one of a select group of 74 U.S. health care facilities (four in Georgia) with accredited cancer programs to receive this national honor for surveys performed last year. The award acknowledges cancer programs that achieve excellence in providing quality care to cancer patients. Northside has received the Outstanding Achievement Award for every survey performed since the Award’s inception in 2004 (2004, 2007, 2010 and 2013) and is one of only 10 hospitals in the country – the only one in the southeast – to do so.
“This award exemplifies Northside’s ongoing commitment to providing high quality, multidisciplinary cancer care as a comprehensive, community hospital Cancer Institute,” said Patti Owen, director of oncology services at Northside Hospital. “We are so pleased to have received it for a fourth consecutive survey; it is a true testament to the hard work and dedication of our physicians and staff.”
The CoC Outstanding Achievement Award is designed to raise awareness on the importance of providing quality cancer care at health care institutions throughout the U.S., as well as motivate other cancer programs to work toward improving their level of care, encourage the sharing of best practices between facilities and educate cancer patients on available quality-care options.
Northside’s Cancer Institute was evaluated on 34 program standards categorized within one of five cancer program activity areas: cancer committee leadership, cancer data management, cancer conferences, clinical services and quality improvement. Northside was further evaluated on seven commendation standards. To be eligible, all award recipients must have received commendation ratings in all seven commendation standards, in addition to receiving a compliance rating for each of the 34 other standards.Northside Hospital is one of the largest and most respected providers of comprehensive cancer care services in Georgia. The hospital is the only one in Atlanta chosen by the National Cancer Institute to be a Community Cancer Center, which gives patients access to the latest cancer research and treatments close to home. More cancer cases are diagnosed and treated at Northside than at any other hospital in Georgia, more cases of breast cancer are diagnosed and treated at Northside than at any other hospital in the Southeast, and the hospital has among the best survival rates in the nation for bone marrow transplants.
