When Christi King and Matthew King had their third child in May, they had no idea that a little more than a year later they would be back at Northside Hospital to accept a college savings contribution for their daughter. But today Clara Grace King was awarded $5,529 for her Path2College 529 Plan account as the winner of the Path2College 529 Plan’s 2014 Newborn Sweepstakes.
Clara Grace was born at Northside Hospital on May 27, 2014, and her father entered her in the Newborn Sweepstakes later that year.
“We started college savings for all three of our children within their first year, because we would like to pay for our children's education as much as we can just as our parents did for us,” said Christi King. “This is a wonderful and unexpected blessing. This is a huge boost towards achieving our savings goals, which can be challenging when trying to plan for three children.”
Additionally, Northside Hospital received $1,529 that will be used for Miracle Babies at Northside Hospital, a program that supports families with newborns in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). More babies are born each year at Northside Hospital than any hospital in the United States.
“Northside Hospital is proud to join with Path2College to help our families prepare for their new babies’ futures,” said Lee Echols, vice president of marketing and communications at Northside Hospital. “We congratulate the King family on being selected as the 2014 winner and wish them all the best.”
Clara Grace is the fourth winner of Path2College’s Newborn Sweepstakes, an annual sweepstakes where one child born in Georgia each year is awarded $5,529 for his or her college savings.
Mitch Seabaugh, executive director of the Path2College 529 Plan, said that the Newborn Sweepstakes is one of the most important programs that the plan does each year.
“Our goal is to raise awareness about the importance of saving for college so that more children in our state are able to continue their education and achieve their dreams,” said Seabaugh. “The earlier families start saving the better, and hopefully this sweepstakes is a fun way for parents and grandparents to become educated about Georgia’s 529 Plan when their loved one is a baby.”
Seabaugh said that more than 2,200 parents and grandparents entered the 2014 Newborn Sweepstakes, and he hopes that the number will be even bigger this year.
“Not only is a great opportunity to get a significant contribution to a college savings account for your child or grandchild, but also hopefully it will inspire families to open and contribute to an account, as well,” said Seabaugh.
King said that this contribution to Clara Grace’s Path2College 529 Plan account “helps lay a foundation for her to explore what her interests and gifts are that she would like to pursue later in life. Having a financial contribution towards those goals will allow her to focus on the joy of the experience even more.”
On January 1, the Path2College 529 Plan kicked off the 2015 Newborn Sweepstakes. Parents, grandparents and guardians of Georgia babies born in 2015 may go to www.Path2College529.com until April 14, 2016 for official rules and to enter for a chance to win. Entrants must be legal residents or taxpayers to Georgia and at least 18 years of age to enter. No purchase necessary. Void where prohibited. Sponsored by the Path2College 529 Plan.
The Path2College 529 Plan will also award $1,529 to the hospital where the winner is born.
This is the fifth year Path2College has held its Newborn Sweepstakes. The 2011 winner, Emma Hayward, and 2013 winner, Charlie Rayn Grant, were born at Northside Hospital in Atlanta and the 2012 winner, Darron Bebronski Lenon, was born at Doctors Hospital in Augusta.
