Northside Hospital-Forsyth is excited to announce that its Bariatric Surgery Program has been granted full approval by the American College of Surgeons’ Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP). The recognition confirms Northside’s commitment to providing the highest quality care for patients undergoing bariatric surgery at the Cumming hospital.
“I couldn’t be more proud of our team of surgeons, registered nurses, dietitians and others who continually assess our bariatric program to provide the best care for our patients,” said Lynn Jackson, administrator of Northside Hospital-Forsyth. “This recognition is a direct result of their efforts.”
A leader in providing state-of-the-art surgical services, Northside Hospital offers an interdisciplinary team of experts including board-certified surgeons, many of whom have been performing weight loss surgery for more than 30 years. Combined with certified bariatric nurse coordinators, weight loss specialists and dietitians, they work to provide the best possible and highly personalized care for all patients.
According to the American College of Surgeons, more than 11 million people suffer from severe obesity and an estimated 93 million people are obese in the United States. Obesity increases the risks of morbidity and mortality because of its association with type II diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and other diseases and conditions. Weight-loss surgery provides the only effective, lasting relief these patients.
MBSAQIP works to advance safe, high-quality care for bariatric surgical patients through the accreditation of bariatric surgical centers. A bariatric surgical center achieves accreditation following a rigorous review process, during which it proves that it can provide the hospital resources necessary for optimal care of obese patients, as well as the support and resources that are necessary to address the entire spectrum of care and needs of bariatric patients – from education and preparation for the surgery, to the operation and then recovery.
“At Northside Hospital-Forsyth, we are committed to offering the latest technologies and procedures for bariatric surgery including single-incision and robotic surgery,” said Amy Fischer, BSN, RN, manager of surgical services, Northside Hospital-Forsyth. “We also have a dedicated nursing unit, where specially trained nurses care for our patients post-surgery.”
Northside Hospital offers bariatric services at its Forsyth, Atlanta and Cherokee campuses. In addition to comprehensive surgical services, pre-surgery informational seminars and aftercare support groups are available.
