When cancer strikes, caregivers are often hard-pressed to provide all of the physical, emotional and logistical support patients need. For example, making sure their loved one gets to and from treatment without jeopardizing their job or inconveniencing the patient can create undue stress.
Shirley Jabang is one such caregiver. When her father, William, was diagnosed with colon cancer, she struggled to get him to his chemotherapy sessions.
“I knew he depended on me to make his appointments, but like many people, I don’t have a job that I can leave for hours on end,” Shirley said.
Thanks to Northside Hospital’s innovative transportation program, made available through grants from the Colon Cancer Alliance, William received vouchers that paid for taxi service to and from his home in Clarkston to Northside’s Lawrenceville location. The program was born out of the ‘Transportation Assistance Program’ at Northside Hospital’s Cancer Institute, to assist patients who lack transportation to and from important medical appointments.
Now William makes every appointment on time, and is able to leave immediately following treatment.
It also provides options for gas cards, and includes round-trip service in the Metro-Atlanta area to appointments beyond treatment, such as colonoscopy appointments and medication refills.
