Northside Hospital - Miracle Baby Ryleigh Goins

Miracle Baby Ryleigh Goins

Posted on: June 10, 2019

During her first trimester, Brittany Goins was having an easy, uneventful pregnancy. This changed at week eighteen, when the Georgia State student and flight attendant started to feel more tired than usual, and the baby became too heavy for her to continue classes. A week later, Brittany began experiencing contractions and found herself admitted to the High-Risk Pregnancy (HRP) unit at Northside Hospital.

While in the HRP unit, and in the caring hands of her OB/GYN and neonatologist, Brittany received daily vitals scans of her baby. During a typical scan one morning, a nurse found a deceleration in Brittany’s baby’s heartbeat. This signified an anomaly that sent nurses and doctors rushing into action. Unable to easily locate the baby, the doctors decided to perform an emergency C-section.

On April 6, 2018, Ryleigh Goins was introduced to the world at 25 weeks and four days old. Just one pound and 12 ounces, Ryleigh emerged breathing on her own, but was quickly brought to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and intubated due to a sepsis infection.

It would be another three weeks, at 28 weeks old, before Brittany would finally be able to hold her daughter.

Brittany remembers her nurses’ encouragement to hold Ryleigh helped her during this time. “I was so afraid to hold her because she was so fragile and so tiny,” Brittany said. “I was afraid I would break her.”

But it was all worth it. Once together, the two were inseparable. “Ryleigh reached out and touched my face – it was like she was saying everything’s going to be okay,” Brittany said.

Brittany and her husband visited Ryleigh in the NICU every day. “We practically lived at Northside, sun up to sun down, every single day for those first couple of months,” she said.

On July 29th, nearly four months after her admission at Northside, Brittany and baby Ryleigh returned home. “I was excited for our hospital stay to come to an end, but it scared me because I was taking her home without the monitors, nurses, and full team there – the security blanket that helped me up until this point.”

Today, Ryleigh is nearly 20 pounds and recently celebrated her first birthday. Enjoying life a day at a time, Brittany is still beyond grateful for her time at Northside Hospital, from the HRP unit to the NICU and everything in between.

I’m so glad we ended up at Northside and I’m extremely thankful to the staff there,” she said. “They’re a great group of people and an amazing team of doctors.”
