Northside Hospital - A Second Chance

A Second Chance

Thanks to the expert care and guidance of our physicians like Dr. Asad Bashey, we remember stories of second chances. One such story that made an impact on our community and in our hearts at Northside Hospital is the story of Katherine Welch and her baby boy, Michael.

Almost three years ago, Katherine Welch was 22 weeks pregnant. She sat on her hospital bed, smiling at her computer. On the screen she watched as her husband opened and held up the baby shower presents one-by-one. “Attending” her shower was a good distraction from the confinement of her positive pressure isolation room on the Blood and Marrow Transplant wing at Northside Hospital, her home for the last four months of her pregnancy while she fought against leukemia and for Michael’s safe delivery.

The shock of her diagnosis was still with her. Only two days earlier, she told an oncologist in Savannah, GA that terminating her pregnancy was not an option. Katherine could already feel Michael kicking and the thought of never getting to meet him or leaving her husband, Nicholas, alone was overwhelming.

At Northside Hospital, oncologists and high risk pregnancy experts worked together to manage her chemotherapy treatments, protect her weakened immune system from outside harm and monitor baby Michael. Katherine remembers getting dressed from head-to-toe in protective gear – gown, gloves and face mask -- just to go from her room in the BMT wing, downstairs to Northside’s Center for Perinatal Medicine for weekly appointments to “see” Michael. She says it was watching him on ultrasound and hearing his heart beat at these appointments that fueled her days to fight.

On January 1, 2016 Katherine and Nicholas Welch welcomed baby Michael into their family and today, he is a healthy and happy two-year-old. Katherine beat leukemia following her son’s delivery, but relapsed a year later. After receiving a stem cell transplant from a full match unrelated donor, she is now in remission and a proud survivor. .
