Northside Hospital is proud to announce an $80,000 contribution to the Atlanta Community Food Bank’s School Pantry Program.
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, approximately one in seven (405,380) children in Georgia were identified as not having adequate access to enough nutritious food to live a healthy life; that statistic is expected to grow by more than 50% through the pandemic.
The Atlanta Community Food Bank aims to fight hunger by engaging, educating and empowering our community. Through their School Pantry Program, the Food Bank partners with local schools in economically disadvantaged communities to distribute healthy and nutritious food to low-income, food-insecure children and their families. In 2019, the Program partnered with 40 schools to provide 43,101 households – including 78,520 children – with enough food for them to prepare almost 1.1 million meals in their homes.Northside Hospital’s contribution will specifically support 20 local school pantries within the health system’s service areas and the operating costs to run them.
"We are incredibly grateful to Northside Hospital for this donation that will greatly assist our school pantry program," said Kyle Waide, president and CEO of Atlanta Community Food Bank. "Together, I am confident that we can provide our community with much needed resources and nutritious food, as we continue to recover from the impact of COVID-19."
“The Atlanta Community Food Bank serves our neighbors by fighting hunger and increasing health and nutrition education,” said Suzanne S. Reitz, director of marketing for Northside Hospital. “That culture of stewardship is shared across the Northside system, where our staff have supported the Food Bank for more than 30 years.”
In addition to the 2020 contribution, Northside Hospital hosts annual food drives to support the Atlanta Community Food Bank, and many Northside employees regularly volunteer to help sort, organize and pack food to be distributed to the Food Bank’s more-than-700 partner agencies.
