The H.E.A.R.T.strings Perinatal Bereavement & Palliative Care program at our Atlanta campus provides community, support and healing to families coping with the death of a baby or the loss of a pregnancy.

Carol Shutley is certified in Grief Counseling and Thanatology, and joined our H.E.A.R.T.strings staff in 2011. Carol works with mothers and couples through the grieving process, facilitating group counseling and coordinating the companion program.

Walking alongside and supporting families who are suffering the devastating loss of a baby is an incredible honor, and truly sacred work,” Carol said. “I have learned something from every family I meet, because each person’s grief journey is unique. Their willingness to share their journey with us helps us to be better caregivers.”

Carol also mentioned that Northside Hospital’s program has served as a model for others around the country.

We are proud to be a leader in caring for these families,” Carol added. “I am part of an amazing team of people who each have a special passion for supporting the perinatal loss community.”.

This season and throughout the year, Carol wants the program to let people know they are not alone in their loss.

Most families who experience this devastating loss believe they are alone,” she said. “This is because the loss of a pregnancy or infant is not generally talked about in our society. We want people to know that there is a community for them where they will find support and understanding. Our goal is to connect people to this ‘tribe’ through our various support group offerings, the annual community remembrance event called the Atlanta Walk to Remember as well as other social gatherings and resources.”

The Walk to Remember is especially impactful every year for Diana Allen, who lost baby KJ in 2016. Read more about how the H.E.A.R.T.strings program helped Diana and husband Ken in their journey to parenthood here.
