Hope For My Pregnancy

On the day before Thanksgiving last year, Atlanta mom-to-be Roxan Gravitt and her husband packed their bags hurriedly at the urgent recommendation of their fetal medicine specialist. She needed to have a highly-advanced laser surgery to save her unborn twins, a procedure not available in the state of Georgia at the time. Roxane’s twins were experiencing uneven blood flow – raising concern for a rare, but life-threatening condition called twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS).

“I knew about the possibility of TTTS, but it was still a shock,” Roxan said.

After undergoing a laser procedure to treat the condition, Roxan spent the rest of her pregnancy on bedrest. At 32 weeks, she gave birth to little Savana (3 lb, 13 oz) and Suzana (3 lb, 12 oz) at Northside Hospital in Atlanta. As Roxan and her husband stayed nearby at the Ronald McDonald house, Savana spent one month in the in the Northside Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), and Suzana stayed for three additional weeks.

“While they were in the NICU, I knew they were in great hands,” Roxan said. “It always meant so much to know they were always being taken care of.”

“Now, they’re sitting up on their own, eating their baby food and not falling behind on anything,” Roxan said, reflecting on how far the twins have come. “I don't tend to let them cry a whole lot, because I feel like I missed out on the crying during periods of time in the NICU. When they were intubated, they couldn't cry.”

As a part of Northside Hospital’s partnership with the Texas Children’s Fetal Center, women who need TTTS treatment can soon have the surgery in Atlanta instead of having to travel out of state. Northside is giving women like Roxan hope for their pregnancies close to home.

“It’s so exciting that Northside Hospital is now offering this procedure in Atlanta,” Roxan added. “It will be so helpful for people who experience the same situation that I did.”
