Northside Gives Athletes Back Their Game

Do you know what to do if you think you might have a concussion?

Facing the possibility that you or a loved one might have sustained a concussion is scary and intimidating. Dr. Daniel Charek, a concussion specialist with our Orthopedic Institute Sports Medicine, has years of experience diagnosing and treating concussions, and is helping athletes in the Greater Atlanta community get back in the game this football season with unparalleled expertise and personalized treatment.

Not only is Dr. Charek a fellowship-trained, licensed neuropsychologist, he also has worked with recreational, high school, college and professional athletes facing serious head injuries. And from his many years of experience, he’s learned that it’s much better to be safe than sorry. “For any person with a concussion, activities posing a risk for further head injury should be avoided until the concussion has resolved,” he said.

One of the most important things an athlete can do following a concussion is immediately remove themselves from play,” Dr. Charek added. “Research has shown that athletes who continue to play after a concussion take an average of twice as long to recover from their injury.”

Dr. Charek trained with industry leaders in concussion care, and is focused on answering our community’s questions surrounding concussion issues.

I feel a strong responsibility to educate the community on how to identify concussions and the importance of getting the proper medical help,” he said.

From injury prevention and physical therapy to orthopedic surgery and diagnostic imaging, the Northside Hospital Orthopedic Institute, offers personalized services based entirely around the needs of athletes and nonathletes alike, from little league to weekend warriors to the pro’s.
