Velma Blackwell

In 1969, when Velma Blackwell joined R.T. Jones Memorial Hospital in Canton, Ga., things were very different from today. She was 24 then and was the first full-time African-American nurse allowed to work in Cherokee County.

“I couldn’t get a place to stay here because I was black,” Velma said. “They were pretty honest about it.”

Velma stayed strong and worked against discrimination throughout the 70s and 80s. She was a prominent voice for equal rights for all in the community.

In October 1997, R.T. Jones hospital joined the Northside Hospital system and became Northside Hospital Cherokee.

Nowadays, Velma is 71-years-old and continues to be a beloved member of the Northside Hospital Cherokee family.”

“I’m proud to see people like me here,” Velma said. “I love what I do and Northside gave me a chance to learn more. I never quit anything. I tried to be the best that I could be… and I was.”

Velma has trained countless of new nurses at the hospital and said she’s excited to now work at the new Northside Hospital Cherokee, 450 Northside Cherokee Blvd. in Canton.

“I don’t have to prove myself anymore,” Velma said. “And people can live in this county. We are a family here. They love me and I love them back.”
