Teen Bariatric Surgery Program

According the Center for Disease Control, teen obesity has more than quadrupled in the past 30 years. In 2012, more than one-third of children and adolescents were considered overweight or obese.

The Center for Weight Management at Northside Hospital is focused on assisting teens and their families understand the impact of obesity and is dedicated to helping teens improve their overall health and psychological well-being. We believe that weight loss surgery should be utilized as a last option when medical weight loss therapy has failed and the complications of obesity have persisted despite all efforts.

The Center for Weight Management Adolescent Bariatric Surgery Program is recognized as a nationally accredited program through the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program. Our team of professionals works with each teen and family to address the comprehensive age-specific needs of teens that are candidates for weight loss surgery. Using a multidisciplinary approach in one central location, teens and families work with dietitians, physicians, surgeons, psychologists, exercise specialists and nurses to achieve their weight loss goals and improve overall health.

Effects of Teen Obesity

Teens who are obese are more likely to develop high cholesterol, high blood pressure, elevated glucose levels, diabetes and are at a greater risk of sleep apnea, bone and joint problems. Additionally, social and psychological problems such as low self-esteem may develop.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirm that overweight adolescents are more likely to carry this disease into adulthood and become more at risk for stroke, several types of cancer, heart disease, asthma, fatty liver disease, reflux, poor quality of life and more.
