Behavioral Health Cancer Support Groups

The Northside Hospital Cancer Institute Psych-Oncology Program represents a specialty area within Behavioral Health Services with a focus on understanding and treating the social, psychological, emotional, spiritual and functional aspects of cancer.

Our virtual* patient and caregiver groups provide support, information and the opportunity to talk with others who understand. We offer the following support groups facilitated by our licensed clinical oncology social workers:


Acceptance & Commitment Therapy Group: Mindful Living With Cancer

Are you or a loved one in treatment for cancer? Are you overwhelmed with the confusion, fear and anxiety about the uncertainty of the future? You are not alone!

The Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Group is a virtual* group that aims to help manage anxiety during cancer treatments and survivorship over an 8-10 week session.

  • WHEN: Meets virtually* on Thursdays from 1 – 2 p.m. for 8-10 weeks.

Brain Cancer Support Group

Have you been diagnosed with a brain tumor OR are you a caregiver for someone who has been diagnosed with a brain tumor?

Virtual Cancer Support Group for Men: Living a Meaningful Life

A virtual* support group for men living with cancer

Are you a male that is living with a cancer diagnosis that affects various aspects of your life? Unsure of how to move forward being a loving and supportive husband, father, brother or son?

Our virtual* cancer support group offers the space and opportunity for men to share their cancer journey and related concerns with other men, who share similar experiences!

TOPICS INCLUDE:

  • Self-care/health and wellness
  • Impact on gender expression (e.g., masculinity)
  • Overcoming physical side-effects
  • Sexual health
  • Relationship of cancer and age
  • Coping strategies to improve mental health baseline

WHEN: Meets virtually* the second and fourth Thursday of each month : 10:30 a.m. — 12:00 p.m.

Spanish Cancer Support Group

A different kind of support group for patients with cancer and their families – fully in Spanish. This support group will be offered virtually*.

Open to all patients with cancer, under treatment and survivors who speak Spanish and their families.

Trigeminal Neuralgia Support Group

A virtual* support group for individuals living with trigeminal neuralgia facial pain.

If you are living with trigeminal neuralgia (TN), you will be pleased to know there is a support group where you can participate in networking with others who are also living with this disease. You will have the opportunity to get information, psychoeducation, emotional support, and develop coping strategies. You will get a sense of validation, a deeper understanding of your disease and treatment from medical and therapeutic professionals, and improved self-advocacy in managing and ensuring a better quality of life.

  • WHEN: Meets virtually* once a quarter on the fourth Tuesday of the month:
    11 a.m. —12:30 p.m.
    2022 Dates: 2/22, 5/24, 8/23, 11/22

Women’s Empowerment Group

A virtual* support group for women cancer survivors age 30 and older who are in treatment or in remission.

TOPICS INCLUDE:

  • Self-care/health and wellness
  • Intimacy/sexuality
  • Grief and loss
  • Relationships
  • New factors in your life since your diagnosis

  • WHEN: Meets virtually* the third Tuesday of every month: 11:30 a.m. — 12:45p.m.

*Note: All groups are facilitated via a telehealth video platform. Once we register you to participate in the group, we will send you an email with the link to access the group. You will need to provide your email address with your RSVP. You will not need to download an app to join this group. Please use Google Chrome as this is the most compatible browser for our program. Also please use any device other than a smart phone if possible as phones have a tendency to cause audio and video distractions.
