Interventional Radiology

What Is Interventional Radiology?

Interventional radiology uses imaging technology to both diagnose and treat various medical conditions. Our board-certified physicians are experts in using the latest technologies to perform these minimally invasive procedures. At Northside Hospital, our dedicated imaging-certified nurse staff handles all preoperative and recovery care for our interventional radiology patients.

What Are the Advantages?

Interventional radiology offers several advantages over traditional invasive procedures:

  • The procedures do not require large incisions and are usually performed through a nick the size of a pencil’s tip.
  • Because the procedures are minimally invasive, there are no large scars, and risk, pain and recovery time are often significantly reduced.
  • Most interventional radiology procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis.
  • Typically, moderate sedation can be used instead of general anesthesia.
  • Procedures are sometimes less expensive than more invasive procedures or other treatment alternatives.
