Medical Weight Loss: Very Low Calorie Diet

Very Low Calorie Diet Specifics

The Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD) Program at our center utilizes research-based meal replacements from New Direction weight control system. This safe and balanced meal replacement is a high-nutrition, calorie-controlled diet plan prescribed by a licensed physician. Our physician and a registered dietitian work together to monitor your plan to ensure you are receiving essential nutrients while safely losing weight.

The VLCD program works best for individuals who are moderately to morbidly obese (a BMI higher than 30). The program can be adapted for pre- and post-bariatric surgery patients and individuals with type 2 diabetes.

Patients who follow the plan closely should experience a loss of 3-5 pounds every week. The VLCD program combines nutrition, behavior modification, exercise education and counseling for a daily regimen. The goal of this program is to help patients achieve weight management through positive behavioral changes.

The VLCD Program includes:

  • Nurse visit
  • Behavioral health screening for readiness
  • Medical evaluation including EKG and lab work
  • 12 weekly group educational sessions
  • Additional visits with a physician
  • Four meals a day for 12 (or 6) weeks
