Spine Surgery

Our Northside Hospital Spine Center surgeons are board-certified and have devoted additional years of training to become spine specialists. Our surgeons are experienced in both non-surgical and surgical treatment of spine diseases and injuries.

Surgery can safely be performed on any area of the spine. The type of surgery depends upon the condition being treated. Our surgeons specialize in the “routine” spine surgeries as well as the complex spine procedures.

When one of your disks herniates (moves out of place), the soft gel inside pushes through the wall of the disk. The disk may then place pressure on the spinal cord and nerves that are coming out of your spinal column. Many of the symptoms caused by a herniated disk get better or go away over time without surgery. Most people with low back or neck pain, numbness, or even mild weakness are often first treated with anti-inflammatory medicines, physical therapy, and exercise. Only a few people with a herniated disk need surgery.

Your doctor may recommend a diskectomy if you have a herniated disk, as well as:

  • Leg pain or numbness that is very bad or is not going away, making it hard to do daily tasks
  • Severe weakness in muscles of your lower leg or buttocks
  • Pain that spreads into your buttocks or legs

Spinal Stenosis

Spinal stenosis is narrowing of the spinal column that causes pressure on the spinal cord, or narrowing of the openings (called neural foramina) where spinal nerves leave the spinal column. Spinal stenosis can be caused by arthritis of the spine, bone diseases such as Paget's disease or achondroplasia, a defective  growth on the spine, herniated disk, tumor or an injury that causes pressure on the nerve root.

If the pain does not respond to these treatments, or you lose movement or feeling, you may need surgery.

There are several types of surgery done to relieve pressure on the nerves or spinal cord:

  • Foraminotomy - Takes pressure off of a nerve in your spinal column and allows it to move more easily. It may be performed on any level of the spine. You will be asleep and feel no pain (general anesthesia).
  • Laminectomy - Surgery to remove the lamina, part of the bone that makes up a vertebra, or bone spurs in your back.
  • Spinal fusion -Surgery to permanently join together two or more bones in the spine so there is no movement between them. These bones are called vertebrae.
