Northside is First in U.S. to use New 128-Slice CT

Posted on: September 11, 2012

Northside Hospital is Atlanta’s most preferred hospital for imaging services and has purchased Siemens Healthcare’s new SOMATOM Perspective computed tomography (CT) system, a 128-slice scanner designed to deliver high image quality and low-dose radiation.  This is the first U.S. installation of the system, which is available at Northside’s Tower Imaging, located at 5670 Peachtree Dunwoody Road in Atlanta.

Northside is highly respected in the community for its state-of-the-art imaging services and has been voted number one for seven consecutive years by metro Atlanta consumers in the National Research Corporation’s annual Healthcare Market Guide.  Annually, nearly 500,000 imaging procedures are performed at the hospital’s network of imaging facilities in Alpharetta, Atlanta, Buford, Canton, Cumming, Dawsonville, Holly Springs, Johns Creek, Marietta and Woodstock.

CT is a non-invasive diagnostic imaging procedure that uses a combination of X-rays and computer technology to produce detailed pictures, or “slices,” of the body, including the head, chest, abdomen and spine.  It allows physicians to pinpoint disease earlier – from bone fractures and concussions to infections and blood clots – with greater precision and without surgery.  The technology may be used to study blood vessels; guide a surgeon to the right area during a biopsy; and identify masses and tumors, including cancer.

“The SOMATOM Perspective 128-slice CT system has enabled us to provide patients with exceptional quality CT scans at the lowest radiation dose possible, quickly and comfortably, from routine cases to more advanced scanning,” says Deidre Dixon, director of radiology services, Northside Hospital.

Included as a standard option on the SOMATOM Perspective is SAFIRE (Sinogram Affirmed Iterative Reconstruction), the latest radiation-dose-saving technology.  To the patient, the lowest possible radiation dose is as critical as high image quality. SAFIRE helps reduce patient radiation dose by up to 60 percent, compared to previous techniques.

“Across all of our CT systems, we strive to provide the highest quality patient care and imaging, while minimizing the radiation that many of these procedures emit to patients,” said Dixon. Northside has consistently implemented new technologies and protocols to achieve lower effective doses for patients.
