Northside Earns National Accreditation for Pulmonary Hypertension Care

Posted on: December 05, 2018

Northside Hospital’s Atlanta campus is the first in Georgia to receive national accreditation as a Pulmonary Hypertension Care Center (PHCC) by the Pulmonary Hypertension Association, recognizing the hospital’s special expertise in evaluating and treating patients with the disease.

Pulmonary hypertension (PH), also known as high blood pressure of the lungs, affects adults and children of all ages and ethnic backgrounds. It can result from the arteries in the lungs becoming damaged, narrowed or stiffened, forcing the right side of the heart to pump extra hard, leading to right heart failure and possibly even death. Heart disease, connective tissue disorders, pulmonary emboli and many other common and rare conditions can put someone at risk for developing the disease.

Symptoms of PH are non-specific and include shortness of breath, fatigue and chest pain. Consequently, people with the disease can go months, sometimes years, believing their symptoms are indicative of other less life-threatening illnesses, such as asthma.

The Pulmonary Hypertension Association’s PHCC accreditation program was rolled out in 2014 and assures that the more-than12,000 people with PH are getting care from clinicians who specialize in their often-misdiagnosed condition.

The Pulmonary Hypertension Program at Northside Hospital is the latest PHCC-accredited program and has been accredited as a Regional Clinical Program. In total, 60 programs have earned PHCC accreditation: 55 Centers of Comprehensive Care (CCCs) comprised of 47 adult and eight pediatric CCCs, and five Regional Care Programs.

Accreditation is based on a center’s overall commitment to PH patients, breadth of health care professionals involved, and scope of services provided.

It is truly an honor to have our team’s hard work and dedication culminate into this prestigious accreditation,” said Paul Boyce, MD, MPH, director of Northside’s Pulmonary Hypertension Program. “Completing this thorough process has served to improve the care that we provide for our patients, and this acknowledgement will ultimately aid Northside Hospital in gaining recognition as a true center of excellence in pulmonary care.”
