Diabetes patient encourages others to make lifestyle changes sooner than later

Posted on: November 22, 2019

At a doctor’s appointment in 2017, Jerry Winkle’s general practitioner noticed his sugar levels were higher than normal. He was advised to carefully watch his diet.

Jerry has been on blood pressure medication since college and was somewhat overweight, but he had never experienced any major health issues. He tried several diet regimes over the years, but weight loss never lasted long.

Two years later, on July 24, 2019, Jerry was at another doctor’s appointment and had his levels checked. Results showed high blood sugar levels again, and he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes can be hereditary, meaning Jerry was most likely at a greater risk of developing it because his grandmother and father had both been diagnosed with the disease.

Following his diagnosis, Jerry attended two nutrition classes with his wife at Northside Hospital Gwinnett, where he was referred to a personal nutritionist.

During classes, he and other attendees learned about both the physical and mental aspects of diabetes and nutrition. As Jerry left, he was told to cut down on his sugar intake and reduce meal portions.

The classes were very informative and helped me understand what I would be dealing with and how I could better manage my diabetes,” he said.

Now, Jerry approaches dieting differently. To maintain better results, he focuses on cutting out carbs. Jerry has been able to control his diabetes without chemical assistance with this new routine.

Today, Jerry says if he could have done one thing differently, he would have acted sooner to address his health.

When the doctor says you are borderline diabetic or headed in the direction of being overweight, go ahead and make the changes you need to make, so you can live better,” Jerry said.
