Northside Cherokee plans for more beds, Emergency Department expansion

Posted on: April 15, 2020

In the three years since Northside Hospital Cherokee opened on its new campus, the hospital has seen tremendous growth and record volumes across multiple specialties.

According to a report by the Atlanta Regional Commission, Cherokee County was the fastest growing county (at 19 percent) in the 10-county region between 2010 and 2018. That growth certainly has been reflected at Northside Hospital Cherokee.

“As more people move into this area, more and more patients are choosing Northside Hospital Cherokee for their health care,” said Billy Hayes, CEO, Northside Hospital Cherokee. “We’re always proud to demonstrate the truly remarkable caliber of Northside’s doctors and nurses.”

The hospital is expanding its services and facilities to provide the region and the community with greater patient access to that care, announcing recently plans to grow by two more floors (floors 9 and 10) in 2021. The project, which was approved by the state in March, will add 53 more inpatient beds for medical/surgical patients and 27 new 23-hour observation beds, bringing the hospital's total inpatient beds to 211.

The project also will include an expansion of the hospital’s Emergency Department, expansion of the main imaging suite to provide selected imaging modalities that will be dedicated to emergency patients, and additional storage and pre-op space for surgical services, as well as classroom and educational space.

Construction is anticipated to start by fall 2020 and be complete in the fall of 2021.

Earlier this year, Northside Hospital Cherokee opened a two-floor vertical expansion of it's Women's Center to support the hospital’s Special Care Nursery and Level-3 NICU services, an expanded well-baby nursery, more observation and extended recovery beds, and education space.

More physicians are opening offices near or on the hospital's campus to better serve patients. A second medical office building opened on the campus in July 2019. In additional to multiple physician practices, the building also includes an outpatient infusion center, orthopedics and rehabilitation services, an expanded cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation clinic, an outpatient imaging center and a dedicated breast care center for women.
