NORTHSIDE HOSPITAL-CHEROKEE ANNOUNCES OPENING OF NEW CARDIAC CATHETERIZATION LAB IN CANTON
August, 2007 - Northside Hospital-Cherokee has opened a new Cardiac Catheterization/ Interventional Radiology Laboratory, located on the hospital’s campus in Canton. Northside Hospital-Cherokee is the first hospital to offer cardiac catheterization and interventional radiology services in Cherokee County.
“Previously, patients in Cherokee and areas north haven’t had an opportunity for access to this type of service without having to drive all the way to Marietta or Atlanta,” says Yvonne Weed, manager of the Cath Lab at Northside Hospital-Cherokee. “We wanted to provide more convenient care to our patients by bringing this service closer to home.”
Cardiac catheterization examines patients for blockages in the heart and coronary arteries. The test examines blood flow in the arteries, blood flow and blood pressure in the chambers of the heart, and function of the heart. Interventional Radiology is a subspecialty that allows specially-trained radiologists to see inside the body while guiding catheters and other instruments through blood vessels and other pathways of the body to perform minimally invasive procedures.
The new Cardiac Cath Lab at Northside Hospital-Cherokee features new state-of-the-art equipment for digital cardiac and interventional imaging and physiologic monitoring, and will offer complete diagnostic cardiac services including heart catheterizations and temporary pacemaker implantation, as well as interventional radiology procedures such as angioplasty, stenting, treatment of DVT (deep vein thrombosis), embolization procedures for the control of abnormal bleeding and tumor formation, and other minimally invasive procedures. Permanent pacemaker implantation and Automatic Internal Cardiac Defibrillator (AICD) implants also are available.
“Physicians have been anxiously awaiting us to finish this project and have promised us patients at the start,” says Weed. “Northside Hospital-Cherokee is very excited to get this new service started.”
Northside Hospital-Cherokee’s new Cardiac Catheterization Lab began seeing patients July 10. The lab is staffed by specialized cardiac and radiology-trained nurses and technologists, each of whom have at least 15 or more years of experience in the field. The lab is located at Northside Hospital-Cherokee, 201 Hospital Road in Canton.
