FREE COMMUNITY SEMINAR ON NEW INCISIONLESS
SURGERY FOR GERD
The Advanced Surgery Center of Georgia, affiliated with Northside Hospital-Cherokee, is hosting a free community seminar about the latest advancement in the evolution of surgical procedures for the treatment of GERD – TIF (Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication) – a new incisionless surgery now available at the hospital. The seminar will be held Thursday, Aug. 27, 2009, 7-8 p.m., at the Surgery Center, 220 Hospital Road, Canton.
Most people will experience heartburn from time to time. Characterized by a painful, burning sensation in the chest, particularly after eating, persistent heartburn, several times a week, can be the primary symptom of a more serious problem known as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, or GERD.
GERD occurs when the lower muscle of the esophagus does not close properly, allowing stomach acid and food to flow from the stomach back into the esophagus. Left untreated, it can damage the lining of the esophagus and cause more serious problems.
Most heartburn and GERD sufferers respond to home treatment plans with simple lifestyle changes and over-the-counter medications. However, the thought of a lifelong regiment of medication or invasive surgery, when needed, is a deterrent for some patients.
During the seminar on Aug. 27, Dr. Barry McKernan, laparoscopic surgeon, will discuss the cause and symptoms of GERD and how the TIF procedure addresses these problems, without the use of any incisions or internal cutting.
The event is free; however, registration is requested.
