Northside Hospital Joins GYN Cancer Research Group
Affiliation with Gynecologic Oncology Group helps establish Northside as a
major research center for the study of GYN cancers.
Through an affiliation with the Georgia Center for Oncology Research & Education (Georgia CORE), Northside Hospital has joined the Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG), a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-funded cooperative cancer research group, dedicated to offering research for women with gynecologic (GYN) cancer. The move helps reinforce Northside’s position as the Georgia leader in the diagnosis and treatment of women’s cancers.
According to NCI, more than 2,000 cases of GYN (cervical, ovarian and uterine) cancer are diagnosed in Georgia each year. More of those cases are treated at Northside Hospital than at any other community hospital in Georgia. Clinical research helps to expand the understanding, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of these types of cancer.
GOG is a non-profit organization with the purpose of promoting excellence in the quality and integrity of clinical and basic scientific research in the field of GYN cancer. The Group is committed to maintaining the highest standards in clinical trials development, execution, analysis and distribution of results. Approximately 45 individual clinical trials are active at any one time within GOG for patients with a variety of GYN cancers.
Northside became a member of GOG through an affiliation with Georgia CORE, an independent, non-profit organization working to increase availability of and access to clinical trials – qualities known to be innovative hallmarks of quality cancer care. Northside joined Georgia CORE in 2010.
In 2010, Northside also was chosen to join the National Cancer Institute’s Community Cancer Centers Program (NCCCP), one of only three hospitals in the southeast to receive this honor.
“Through affiliations with organizations like NCI, GOG and Georgia CORE, Northside is offering women access to the very latest cancer drugs, treatment and prevention advances through NCI-sponsored clinical trials,” said Guilherme Cantuaria, M.D., medical director of the NCCCP at Northside Hospital, “allowing them to receive state-of-the-art clinical expertise and compassionate care close to home, and ultimately resulting in better outcomes.”
A proven leader in cancer care, Northside Hospital leads the way in groundbreaking procedures for better outcomes and less-invasive treatments for GYN cancers. The hospital was the first in Georgia to perform a robotic radical hysterectomy for cancer and ranks in the top 5 percent of all robotic GYN programs in the U.S. The hospital also offers HIPEC (Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemoperfusion), which delivers heated chemotherapy directly into the abdomen, and has performed more of these procedures for ovarian cancer than any other hospital.
In the last year, Northside has made considerable advances in its GYN Oncology Program. The hospital completely renovated its 19-bed GYN Oncology inpatient unit and added a GYN oncology nurse navigator, who is dedicated to guiding each patient through her cancer journey, in hopes of making it a little easier. Northside also expanded the GYN oncology chemotherapy services it offers through its Infusion Center. Northside remains dedicated to offering a patient-centered experience by accommodating the needs of women.
