Northside-Atlanta Auxiliary Helps Provide Expanded Cardiac Services

Northside Hospital-Atlanta recently expanded its Cardiology Services to offer Percutaneous Coronary Interventions – PCI (also known as cardiac angioplasty).  The new service was made possible, in part, by a generous donation from the hospital’s Auxiliary.

“As Northside Hospital celebrates its 40th anniversary, the hospital is focusing more on expanding its cardiology services,” said Sally Joyce, immediate past president, Northside Hospital-Atlanta Auxiliary.  “The Northside Hospital-Atlanta Auxiliary was pleased to fund this special project, with a gift of $750,000.00 toward the purchase of the PCI equipment for the Cardiac Cath Lab.”

In addition to the PCI technology, the Auxiliary also purchased a new treadmill and flat-screen TV for the hospital’s cardiac rehab program, a medically supervised exercise program for patients who have experienced a heart attack or open heart surgery, or who are at high risk for cardiac disease.

“The Auxiliary is such an important part of the hospital’s operations,” said Bob Quattrocchi, president and CEO, Northside Hospital.  “Their generous support of the hospital’s Cardiology Services will allow our patients to receive the latest in technology, expanded services and high-quality health care, all under one roof.”

PCI is a nonsurgical procedure that unblocks your arteries using a catheter with a small balloon attached to its tip.  An alternative to coronary bypass surgery, angioplasty requires a one or two-day hospital stay, and recovery time is about a week.  The procedure is extremely effective, causes very little pain and can take as little as 30 minutes to complete.  The service, which became available at Northside Hospital-Atlanta in September, allows the hospital to provide potentially muscle-saving heart services, without having to transfer the patient to another facility.

Northside Hospital-Atlanta’s Auxiliary began serving the hospital and community in 1970 with 100 volunteers.  Today, the Auxiliary has 265-280 active volunteers, from ages 14-101 years, who work in more than 30 departments and who have given more than 52,700 hours of service to the hospital in the past year.  Each year, the Auxiliary raises money through Gift Shop sales, commissions on baby photo sales and several other fundraisers throughout the year.  The money is used to fund scholarships to those interested in the medical field and support programs and services throughout the hospital.
