State-of-the-art equipment and a multidisciplinary team of experts are used in diagnosing and staging cancer at Northside Hospital. This team includes skilled, board-certified radiologists who specialize in diagnosing specific kinds of cancer along with oncologists, pathologists, hematologists, and many other skilled health care professionals.
Diagnostic procedures include, but are not limited to:
- Imaging options including X-rays, ultrasound, MRI, as well as the less-invasive Positron Emission Tomography (PET)−which can be used to detect sites of cancer not seen by many other imaging modalities and is especially useful in the evaluation of lung cancer. For a complete listing of services and radiology locations visit the Radiology section under our Medical Services offerings.
- For biopsies, options include stereotactic, or core needle biopsy−a less invasive method for diagnosing breast cancer.
- For faster, more accurate biopsy results, our 24-hour lab is staffed with board-certified, experienced pathologists.
- Our Flow Cytometry Lab, licensed by the State of Georgia, uses state-of-the-art, FDA approved equipment and offers test results in 24-hours, on average, with on-call services on weekends and off-hours. Our services, among others, include:
- Leukemia/Lymphoma phenotyping
- Residual disease determinations
- Stem Cell quantitation
- Fetal hemoglobin determinations
