Gynecologic Oncology Program

The Cancer Care Program at Northside Hospital is dedicated to the treatment and care of all cancer including cervical, ovarian and endometrial (uterine) cancer, and is the only one of its kind in Atlanta. Northside Hospital leads the state in detection and treatment of cancer offering a continuum of cancer care from screening and education to diagnosis and treatment, clinical research to support and survivorship. In fact, nearly three times as many cases of gynecologic cancer are diagnosed and treated at Northside than at any other hospital in Georgia. Our team of specially-trained staff, be it in the operating room or the inpatient oncology unit, care for women with gynecologic malignancies.

 

Offering a full spectrum of cancer treatments Northside has experienced tremendous growth of the daVinci Robotic Surgery Program. Northside now ranks in the top 5% in the United States offering robotic surgery at it's Northside Hospital Atlanta and Cherokee locations. This technology provides patients many advantages including smaller incisions, reduced blood loss, a shorter hospital stay and quicker recovery time.

 

As part of our commitment to providing the latest treatment available, we participate in clinical trials, including an international trial for radioimmunotherapy, an innovative treatment for ovarian cancer. What’s more, in conjunction with Southeastern Gynecologic Oncology, we have developed a screening program called the Familial Ovarian Cancer Screening Program. This unique program offers education and preventative suggestions, as well as evaluation and identification of individuals at high risk for ovarian cancer. Understanding Gynecologic Cancers

Gynecologic oncology (cancer) can occur at any age. As you grow older, your risk for certain gynecologic cancers actually increases significantly so just because you’re beyond the “childbearing years” doesn't mean you can ignore your gynecologist. Pap Test    
Cervical Women ages 21 to 29  Once a year
  Women ages 30 to 69 Every 2 to 3 yrs. after 3 consecutive normal tests
  Women ages 70 and older Optional after 3 normal Pap tests in a row and no abnormal Pap results for 10 years (depending on risk factors)
Endometrium (uterus)  High-risk women beginning at age 35 (at menopause, women should report bleeding or spotting to their doctors)  Once a year
