Treatment

As the leader provider in cancer care in Georgia every person involved with treating your cancer is a member of a specially trained team of professionals − oncology physicians, nurses, therapists, clinical nurse specialists, nutritionists, case managers, pharmacists and pastoral care providers. Working closely together, they provide the highest possible level of care for all your medical, emotional and spiritual needs.

Treatment options include, but are not limited to:

Surgery – For the majority of cancer patients, surgery is an integral component to their treatment plan. Patients at Northside Hospital can rest assured that they are receiving high-quality surgical services from some of health care’s most experienced surgeons. More surgeries are performed at Northside Hospital-Atlanta than any other hospital in Atlanta, and we have recently expanded our surgical services at our Forsyth and Cherokee hospitals.

We believe in investing in state-of-the-art surgical technology. Northside Hospital-performs more da Vinci® Robotic Surgical System than any other hospital in Georgia. This ground-breaking technology enables surgeons to perform inimally invasive procedures such as prostectomies and hysterectomies.

We also offer a wide-range of surgical specialists offering other important surgical procedures for cancer patients such as total breast reconstruction for breast cancer patients and prostate seed implant surgery for prostate cancer patients. In fact, surgeons at Northside Hospital-Atlanta are known as leaders in each procedure and perform among the most procedures in the state.

Radiation Oncology – Available at three locations: inpatient and outpatient services at our campus at Northside Hospital-Atlanta; or outpatient services at the Northside Dunwoody or Northside Roswell Centers. Each center is staffed by radiation therapists, a medical physicist, a medical dosimetrist, registered nurses and support staff. While we provide radiation therapy for all cancers, the most frequently treated at a Northside Hospital center are breast, prostate and lung cancers.

Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) – This advanced form of 3D radiation therapy aims radiation beams from several directions and modulates the strength of the beams, minimizing the dose of radiation reaching normal tissue while delivering a uniformly high dose to the cancer. For our prostate cancer patients, we also provide HDR (High Dose Rate) brachytherpay as a treatment option.  The patient undergoes a seed implant procedure in the operating room and receives the HDR treatment on an outpatient basis. The advantage to this treatment option is dose escalation which can improve cure rates with reduced side effects.
