Northside Hospital Forsyth performed its 100th robotic-assisted bronchoscopy on May 30.

Robotic-assisted bronchoscopy is a minimally invasive option for patients requiring biopsy of suspicious lung nodules. This technology facilitates precise sampling of nodules deep within the lung, enhancing accuracy and reducing complications.

Why it matters: According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer (both small cell and non-small cell) is the second most common cancer in both men and women in the U.S. Approximately 234,580 new cases are estimated in 2024.

The advantages of robotic bronchoscopy include improved accuracy, reduced risks and quicker diagnosis and treatment times. Doctors emphasize the technology's ability to biopsy nodules in challenging locations, which might otherwise pose risks or prove too small for conventional biopsy methods.

Northside Forsyth’s interventional pulmonology team began using this advanced technology in November 2023.

What they’re saying: “We are proud and excited to offer the latest lung cancer diagnosis technology to Forsyth County,” said Dr. Simha Jagadeesh, pulmonologist. “We can now diagnose lung cancer earlier while also maintaining patient safety.”

  • “It is a privilege to work with this team and we are happy to be able to use this robotic technology to improve lung cancer patient outcomes,” added pulmonologist Dr. Eduardo Egea

Robotic bronchoscopy is available at Northside's Atlanta, Cherokee, Forsyth and Gwinnett campuses.

A new dedicated Lung Nodule Clinic will open at Northside Hospital Forsyth in summer 2024 to expedite the workup of patients with suspicious lung nodules.
