Each month, Northside Hospital honors special nurses with DAISY Awards. Patients and their families, along with the nurses’ co-workers, have the chance to recognize nurses for care that makes a difference.
Here are winners at Northside hospitals from October, November, December and January:
Isabelle Betances, R.N., Northside Hospital Cherokee
What they said: “Izzy was the first person and voice I heard from after my daughter’s admission to Northside. She was extremely professional over the phone and her calm, sweet voice brought me comfort, and I could sense my daughter was in great hands.”
Desiree Betters, R.N., Labor and Delivery, Northside Hospital Forsyth
What they said: “Desi came into the room and said, ‘I read your birth plan and I’m going to do everything in my power to make this a beautiful, special and redemptive birth,’ and she did just that. … Desi made me feel safe and secure and cared for amid the unknowns and ever-changing stages of labor. Desi listened to me — I mean really really listened to me — and took that information to the medical staff to help improve my care.”
Christina Burton, R.N., Northside Hospital Atlanta
What they said: “Christina walked in the room with so much brightness. She made a real connection with my daughter because they are both nurses and similar in age. … She was a champ at her job, a huge cheerleader and had a wonderful connection with all of us. I was sad when her shift was over because we enjoyed her presence so much.”
William Carden, R.N., postpartum, Northside Cherokee
What they said: “He constantly came in and checked on mom and baby, making sure their care and comfort was a top priority. There were many times we needed to get restocked on supplies and other things and Will never skipped a beat and was always quick to make sure the needs were met. … Throughout the entire process, Will showed compassion and the level of care he gave us was beyond exceptional.”
Annalisa Pugmire, R.N., Northside Forsyth
What they said: “Without the care and attention to detail that Annalisa provided, I am not sure I would be here today. At her suggestion, the doctor was able to successfully remove nearly 3 liters of blood that had pooled in my stomach. Annalisa was the calm in the storm of what became one medical event after another.”
Mia Short, R.N., Northside Forsyth
What they said: “She has such a motherly and friendly nature that she made our experience so pleasant. Not only does she have excellent bedside manner, but she also genuinely cares about patient advocacy. … My family is eternally grateful to her and this entire hospital. You all have made this laboring and postpartum experience a completely different process.”
Wesley Werner, R.N., Intensive Care Unit, Northside Cherokee
What they said: “The students he is leading and mentoring have shining examples of how to model their own patient approaches. … Wes checked in constantly and his presence lifted the spirits of everyone in the room. … We will forever be grateful for your professionalism, sense of humor and big heart.”
George Wertz, R.N., 7 East, Northside Atlanta
What they said: “I could never have imagined what he would come to mean to my family. George quickly recognized my mother’s emotional struggles and adjusted himself to meet her where she was, a very sick, emotional and grieving woman who was at the end of her rope and desperate for relief.”
Emily Winter, R.N., Northside Forsyth
What they said: “Emily is our nursing queen! She worked with my husband three consecutive days and one night. She was very sweet and kind and caring. … She built trust in my husband, who is not very trusting at all. She took valuable time to talk with him and to listen and really hear him — understanding fears that were not said out loud.”
