Northside Hospital celebrates Dr. Jeff Marshall’s legacy

Northside Hospital Heart Institute is celebrating the career and contributions of Dr. J. Jeffrey Marshall as he retires following decades of leadership in cardiovascular medicine, patient care and physician education.

A nationally recognized interventional cardiologist, Dr. Marshall has helped advance the treatment of complex coronary artery disease, acute myocardial infarction, cardiogenic shock, peripheral vascular disease, carotid artery disease and other cardiovascular conditions. He also played an important role in the growth of Northside’s cardiovascular program.

“Dr. Marshall’s influence on cardiovascular care extends far beyond the patients he has personally treated,” said Dr. Pradyumna Tummala, an interventional cardiologist with Northside Hospital Heart Institute. “He has helped build programs, mentor physicians and create systems of care that will continue benefiting patients across Georgia for years to come.”

Dr. Marshall’s career has included numerous leadership roles in Georgia and nationally. He has served as chief of cardiology, governor of the Georgia Chapter of the American College of Cardiology, chairman of the Georgia Composite Medical Board and president of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography & Interventions (SCAI). He also was inducted as a Master of SCAI and received the organization’s Mason Sones Award.

Dr. Marshall also participated in numerous clinical trials evaluating emerging approaches to cardiovascular care, including the ACT I trial of carotid artery stenting, the PRECISE trial of robotic-assisted PCI, and the ICE-T TIMI 49 trial involving patients with acute STEMI. His research also included a randomized trial comparing off-pump and conventional coronary artery bypass grafting, reflecting his involvement in advancing both interventional and surgical approaches to treat cardiovascular disease.

His contributions extend well beyond the catheterization lab. Dr. Marshall has trained and mentored generations of cardiologists and worked to strengthen systems for emergency cardiovascular care throughout Georgia.

As Governor of the Georgia Chapter of the American College of Cardiology, Dr. Marshall played a pivotal role in advocating for House Bill 874, which requires automated external defibrillators and cardiac emergency response plans in all Georgia public K-12 schools. He testified in support of the legislation before the Senate Education Committee, helping advance a measure designed to prepare schools better to respond when sudden cardiac arrest occurs.

For colleagues such as Tummala, Dr. Marshall’s legacy is as much about the physicians and communities he influenced as it is about the clinical advances he helped champion.

“Jeff has always challenged those around him to think bigger about what cardiovascular care can be — not only through new technology and treatments, but through collaboration, education and a relentless focus on doing what is best for the patient,” Tummala said. “It has been a privilege to work alongside him and learn from his leadership.”

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Marshall’s colleagues know him for his dedication to patients, generosity as a mentor and brilliant sense of humor.

Northside Hospital Heart Institute congratulates Dr. Marshall on his retirement and wishes him, his wife, Julie, and their family happiness and good health in the years ahead.
