The lights were bright. The crowd was loud. Mercedes-Benz Stadium was humming with anticipation. All signs pointed to South Gwinnett High School player Jayden Juniors being fated for a phenomenal season opener. Between the hedges, however, anything can happen.
An unforgettable gridiron moment in the making for the Georgia teen abruptly snapped out of reach.
“I was devastated,” Jayden wrote.
In football, injuries don’t wait until after our highlight reel moments. They happen suddenly, often when least expected.
The wide receiver was tackled out of bounds, when his knee hyperextended. His hamstring was significantly damaged in the collision — putting his senior year season in serious jeopardy. Jayden is Northside Hospital's latest Comeback Athlete of the Week, and this is his story.
A season saved
“(It) felt like I had let my team down and wasn't able to help them,” he wrote.
It was up to Northside Hospital sports medicine expert Dr. Jamel Hill, and his world-class orthopedics team, to save the 17-year-old standout’s season.
Supporting the largest high school athletic outreach program in the Southeast, Northside Hospital Orthopedics serves over 50 Georgia schools, providing sports medicine specialists, athletic trainers and more to safely bring out the best in local athletes. Northside is the official healthcare provider for Georgia State University athletics, Reinhardt University and Georgia Gwinnett College. These partnerships are powered by a massive team of world-class health experts with a unified goal: getting student-athletes, like Jayden, safely back to doing what they love most.
For this South Gwinnett High School player, support began immediately on the sideline of his season opener. Jamel and a team of athletic trainers examined his injury, pulling him from the game. Recovery needed to start swiftly.
“During my recovery, I received amazing care and great support from my trainers — Megan Roach, MA, LAT, ATC and Jerry Reese Jr., MS, LAT, ATC — at South Gwinnett High, who worked closely with our wonderful team physician Dr. Jamel Hill, M.D., M.S., from Northside Hospital Orthopedics.”
From chiropractic care to cryotherapy, Jayden’s injury needed time, patience and precise treatment.
“They got me started on an anti-inflammatory gel, compression sleeve and rest that evening,” he wrote. “They did 1-2 rounds of treatment daily. They also monitored my symptoms daily and utilized the Navy hamstring rehab protocol. It was an amazing team approach to get me healthy and back on the field. They did everything in my best interest to not just look at the short-term goal of getting me back on the field but the long-term goal as well. That has always been their mission from my first day at South Gwinnett.”
After weeks of hard work, the wide receiver’s senior season was finally saved. Following a bye week, he was even ready to play for the team’s following game.
“I did what I needed to do as an athlete and owe a huge thank you to my entire village for helping me recover in 18 days,” Jayden wrote. “I'm extremely blessed and grateful I was given the tools and resources I needed to get back on the field as soon as possible.”
He, now a Kennesaw State University NCAA Division I athletic scholarship recipient, made five catches for 116 yards and a touchdown in his comeback to the field — an unforgettable gridiron moment hard won.
“Don't give up or get down on yourself no matter what may come,” Jayden wrote. “Pray and do the work that is expected of you to heal yourself efficiently. Focus on the positive and stay mentally strong because it's not over. As long as you listen to the people around you who are supporting you, you will be just fine. Keep going and persevering, because there is light on the other side of recovery.”
