Explained: What is cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a type of fat that plays a vital role in the body, helping to produce hormones, vitamin D and bile for digestion. It travels through the bloodstream in the form of lipoproteins, categorized as either high-density lipoproteins (HDL) or low-density lipoproteins (LDL).

According to Northside Hospital registered dietitian Lindsay Mikolaicik, “Your diet plays a key role in managing cholesterol levels.”

Saturated fats — found in fatty meats, full-fat dairy, butter and fried foods — can increase LDL (bad) cholesterol, while unsaturated fats from sources like olive oil, avocados, nuts and seeds can support heart health.

A diet rich in fiber from whole grains, fruits, vegetables and beans can help lower cholesterol naturally. Combined with regular exercise, these healthy choices are essential for maintaining balanced cholesterol levels and promoting overall heart health.

Watch as Lindsay Mikolaicik breaks down cholesterol and shares expert tips on making smarter food choices for a healthier lifestyle!
