Northside 101: Fibroid awareness

Fibroids are common, noncancerous growths that develop in the muscle of the uterus. While many people with fibroids have no symptoms, others may experience heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pressure, frequent urination, constipation or fullness in the lower abdomen.

In this video, Dr. Aaron Doctor, obstetrician and gynecologist with Northside Women’s Specialists, explains what causes fibroids, common symptoms, how fibroids can affect fertility and when treatment may be needed. He also discusses fibroid treatment options, including medications, minimally invasive treatments, myomectomy and hysterectomy.

If you're experiencing symptoms of fibroids, an individualized evaluation can help determine the best treatment option based on your symptoms, age and plans for future fertility.

Talk with your healthcare provider if you have concerns about fibroids or symptoms that may be affecting your daily life.
